People Skills Learning has unofficially adopted a village school 62 kms from Bangalore. Effort is being taken to provide the children amenities such as books, toys, educational games, sports equipments etc., for overall development.
We belive that in our own small way we can make a difference to the society, and education is the best way to go forward for development. What started off as a small intervention is now becoming larger with the involvement of the village elders as well as the women in the village. The people in the village are slowly getting used to the idea of not just asking for grants from the Block development officer or the government representatives. They believe that the way forward is for them to become self sufficient.
We are helping them to identify the areas in which they have skills or they can acquire skills without depending on others. The women believe that they can acquire skills to cut and sew. Also, with Bangalore being the garment manufacturing hub, it would be easy for them to generate revenue by taking up job work. We are in the process of getting them a few machines and craftsman who can tarin them for the same.
The villagers already rear silk worms as they fall in the area of silk worm rearing. The stumbling block is water. The villagers are completely dependent on rains for groeing crops as well as Mulberry leaves for silk worm rearing. Rain water harvesting as well as lake management is required for them to be able to do silk worm rearing all through the year.
